Managing your Search Engine Optimism

Maybe you are ready to take your first crack at SEO, or maybe this isn’t your first rodeo; regardless, you probably have a certain level of expectation in terms of results when you grab the bull by the horns and invest in search engine optimization. And hey, why shouldn’t you? Like with anything, you expect to get what you paid for, right? Absolutely- however it is also important to be educated about managing those expectations and knowing what it is you’ve paid for. Often times, when it comes to SEO, client expectations exceed realistic goals. But it is not the clients’ fault! For years, bad SEO companies have tainted the industry, making things difficult for the honest companies by conditioning clients to expect guarantees and absolute timeframes. In reality, the easiest way to spot a bad SEO company is if they promise guaranteed top rankings. The truth is, their promises can only guarantee one of two things- they will fail to produce, or they will put your website at severe risk for being blacklisted by employing unethical “black hat” SEO techniques to achieve rankings.

Let’s not let a few bad apples spoil the fruit basket for the rest of us. And since we simply can’t help ourselves but to talk about expectations, let’s go over some of the things you should expect from your SEO company.

Good SEO companies understand that a healthy company/client relationship starts with both parties being on the same page. Communication is key when discussing goals and progress. As a client, you should expect transparency from your SEO company. Not tricks, voodoo magic, or smoke and mirrors. SEO can be fickle at times. Rankings fluctuate, plain and simple. It’s not just about whether keywords have finally reached the first page, or that your web traffic has improved by X amount. Don’t be afraid to be search engine optimistic. Remain confident, stay active, and hold on to that virtue we call patience. SEO is a long and ongoing process- a lot like planting a cherry tree. All you want is the fruit but you still have to take the time to nurture the plant and watch it grow. Once you have that full grown tree, you’ll always have cherries to eat, as long as you continue to water it and look after it.
